Today, Service-oriented architecture (SOA [pronounced "sÅ-uh" or "es-Å-Ä"]) technology offers businesses the potential for enhancing their competitive advantage at unprecedented rates. However, in order for that potential to be realized, the architecture and implementation of the technology utilized must be driven by and based upon a business model which has the full commitment of senior management.
Developing a system without such commitment is both possible and seductively simple. However, at best, this course of action will generally result in an expensive 'cruise to nowhere' which magnifies the shortcomings of and user frustrations with the current business system overall.
When SOA systems are appropriately driven by and integrated with business models supported by senior management, they can provide exceptional levels of productivity and customer satisfaction improvements.
